Maryann Lucas

Maryann Lucas is an American oil painter based in Sag Harbor, New York, known for landscapes, seascapes, and studio still lifes built from direct observation and natural light. She is primarily self-taught, developing her practice through consistent daily work while also taking workshops and instruction with East End painters she admires, including Michael Klein, Dennis Perrin, Ben Fenske, and Ramiro and Melissa Franklin Sanchez. Her approach is grounded in working from life: she regularly paints outdoors en plein air, then continues refining work in the studio, keeping the focus on composition, value structure, and the way light transforms ordinary subject matter.

Lucas paints exclusively in oils and is known for setting out “almost daily” to capture the East End in changing conditions and seasons, returning to the same motifs as the light shifts through the year. Her still lifes and landscapes track that seasonal rhythm, with brighter florals and outdoor scenes in spring and summer and more introspective interiors and quieter landscapes as the days shorten. Alongside her studio practice, Lucas has a strong academic background, earning a B.A. from Georgetown University and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, a path that reinforces the clarity and editing instincts collectors respond to in her paintings.
