Ambitions

Janet Crawford is an American oil painter based in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, known for candid portraits of the equestrian world, especially horses and dogs. With a BFA from Rhode Island College, she approaches her subjects with a portrait painter’s mindset: structure first, then expression, then the small details that make an animal feel specific. Her work focuses on the honest moments that happen around the ring and the barn, where posture, tension, and attention tell you as much as a face does.

Over the course of her career, Crawford’s paintings have appeared on publication covers and her work is held in collections across the United States, Canada, and Europe. She’s also closely connected to the Hackney pony community, a subject she returns to with both familiarity and respect, painting the breed and its culture with an insider’s understanding.
