Matthew Jay Russell is a contemporary coastal painter known for stillness, clarity, and strong structure. Raised in Argyle, New York, he grew up around open fields and simple rural architecture, and that background continues to shape his preference for clean spatial relationships and edited compositions. Early drawing interests in buildings and interiors still show up in the way he frames and simplifies scenes.

He works primarily across New England and the Adirondacks, building paintings around strong composition and restrained color decisions.
