Satsuma Orange I

Deborah Hill is an American painter whose work bridges landscape, still life, and equine symbolism through an abstract-realism approach. She earned her BFA in painting from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she received a faculty award for excellence in art. Hill builds each composition through deliberate balances of color, brushwork, and paint application, creating what she describes as a “visual roadmap” that guides the viewer through the scene rather than reproducing it literally. Her subject matter draws from the natural world — rural vistas, beaches, marshes, and shorelines — while still allowing room for studio-based still life work.

Her ongoing Crossroads series centers on the idea of mobility, treating it as both physical movement and a state of mind shaped by circumstance, with the horse used as a recurring symbol. Hill works between Charleston, South Carolina and Upstate New York, and her paintings are held in collections across the U.S. and overseas. Her work has earned notable recognition, including Best in Show at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition (2018) and an award through the National Acrylic & Oil Painters’ Society (Best Impressionism category) noted by the Buffalo Society of Artists.
