Mid Fall

Dennis Sheehan (born 1950, Boston) is a contemporary Tonalist painter whose landscapes prioritize atmosphere over description, using a dark, richly pigmented palette and controlled transitions to make light feel as if it emerges from within the scene. He trained in the Boston School tradition at the Vesper George School of Art and the Montserrat School of Visual Art, and continued his studies with teachers connected to the R.H. Ives Gammell lineage, including Robert Cormier and Richard Whitney. He has also painted for years with the Putney Painters under Richard Schmid, reinforcing a practice grounded in sustained observation, discipline, and craft.

Sheehan is often linked to the Barbizon School and American Tonalists, with influences that include George Inness and the Tonalist painter Bruce Crane. While he draws from tradition, his work avoids “pretty” scenery in favor of quiet intensity, often creating studio-imagined landscapes that lean into shadow, dusk, and transitional light. His paintings have been widely collected and placed in prominent public and private collections, including the White House, and his work has been featured in publications such as American Artist.
