Mandrake

Ken Orton is a British-born painter known for luminous still lifes of antique mason jars and bottles, where light, refraction, and perspective become the true subject. Raised in the industrial landscape of Birmingham, England, he developed an early habit of drawing what surrounded him, then pursued formal art education and spent years teaching the fundamentals of composition, color theory, and draftsmanship. That educator’s foundation shows in his work today: deliberate structure, a clear focal point, and a deep understanding of how subtle shifts in value create dimension and atmosphere.

After relocating to the United States, Orton discovered a collection of antique jars and bottles that sparked a long-running exploration of glass as both object and optical lens. He works from carefully composed references, balancing precise realism with intentionally softer passages that keep the painting human and painterly rather than photographic. Now dividing his time between the Catskill Mountains of New York and Florida, he continues building paintings that feel quiet and mesmerizing, where raised lettering, curved surfaces, and decaying light create a kind of visual music across the canvas.
