Last Light

Daniel Peterson is a regional New York artist whose paintings are rooted in the landscapes of the Adirondacks and Upstate New York. Working primarily in oil, he returns to lakes, forests, distant mountains, and open stretches of water, using the geography of the region as the foundation for paintings centered on light, atmosphere, and the experience of being in the landscape.

His work remains representational while allowing the handling of paint to shape the mood of the scene. Reflections soften into water, tree lines are simplified into broader masses, and changes in season, weather, and time of day are carried through shifts in value and color rather than excessive detail. This balance gives Peterson’s paintings a strong sense of place without making them feel overly literal.

The Adirondack landscape provides an especially natural subject for his approach, with its combination of expansive water, dense woods, changing weather, and dramatic seasonal color.
