Greg Montgomery is an American artist, illustrator, and designer best known for his distinctive racing imagery and his historic series of posters for the Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs, New York. He received formal art training at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he studied painting and lithography, and at the College of St. Rose in Albany, where he studied serigraphy. He also completed watercolor master classes in Europe with Australian watercolorist David K. Taylor. Montgomery’s work is recognized for its intentional use of white space and strong graphic structure, a style that translates the energy of racing into clean, memorable compositions.

After completing his degree, Montgomery built a long career in design and visual communication, working as an art director and set designer for public television in New Mexico, then in corporate marketing for General Electric in Albany, including work connected to major campaigns and the GE calendar. He later served as art director for Capital Region magazine and retired from the Albany Times Union as a design editor. Alongside his design career, he continued producing fine art and illustration, including major commissions such as 42 book covers for Berkley Publishing’s reissues of Dick Francis and an official poster for Walt Disney World’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. His racing work has been exhibited widely, including a solo exhibition at the Arts Center Gallery in Saratoga and a 30-year retrospective at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Today, Montgomery’s posters and prints are held in public and private collections worldwide, including the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, and his work is shown at Spa Fine Art in Saratoga Springs.
