Chasing

Karen Leoni is an American artist known for plein air–inspired paintings that capture atmosphere, light, and the essence of landscape. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area from Atlanta in 1989, she was drawn back toward drawing and painting, responding to California’s varied terrain and the way light moves across it. Painting outdoors became a way of slowing time and sharpening perception, and her work reflects that focus: careful observation, honest color, and a calm sense of place.

Leoni works in both oil and pastel, believing each medium strengthens the other. She often begins with small plein air studies, using those fast, light-chasing sessions to lock in accurate color relationships and build “artist memory.” Larger studio paintings grow from that foundation, sometimes incorporating figures or animals within the landscape. She also travels to paint, including extended time in Italy, expanding her subject matter while staying true to her core interest: the quiet magic of being fully present in a scene as it changes.
