Artist Biography +
Anna Razumovskaya portrait Anna Razumovskaya is a Russian-born contemporary figurative painter whose work combines traditional European training with a distinctly modern, expressive approach. She earned her M.F.A. from the Russian State Academy of Fine Arts in Rostov-on-Don, graduating in 1991 with the distinction of “high-class artist.” She continued her studies in Germany, Belgium, and Holland, broadening her exposure to both classical and modern European painting before eventually settling in Canada. Her work reflects that combination of influences, with precise drawing and carefully modeled figures often set against spontaneous, abstract passages of color and texture.

Razumovskaya is best known for paintings of women, dancers, musicians, and intimate figurative subjects. Her figures often carry a sense of movement even when posed, with flowing fabric, elongated gesture, and expressive brushwork used to shape both mood and composition. She has cited a strong interest in the great portrait traditions of European painting, including artists such as John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt, and Peter Paul Rubens, while her handling of paint brings those classical references into a looser and more contemporary visual language.

Her practice extends across oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, still life, landscape, and abstraction, though the female figure remains central to her identity as an artist. Thick impasto, transparent passages, and energetic marks frequently coexist within a single composition, creating surfaces that feel both controlled and spontaneous. That contrast between refined figuration and freer abstraction has become one of the defining characteristics of her work.

Razumovskaya has exhibited internationally, with solo presentations in cities including New York, Paris, Toronto, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, London, Edinburgh, Shanghai, and Taipei. Her paintings are held in private collections around the world, and her work continues to be exhibited through galleries across North America and Europe. Across decades of painting, she has maintained a recognizable balance between classical technique, expressive color, and contemporary abstraction, creating figurative work that feels rooted in tradition without being confined by it. ×
