Artist Biography +
Steve Smulka Prints portrait Steve Smulka is an American painter born in Detroit, Michigan in 1949, best known for contemporary realist still lifes that transform everyday objects into dramatic studies of light, scale, and surface. He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City on a full scholarship, studying with Chuck Close among others, and later earned his MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After graduate school, he returned to New York and continued developing a practice rooted in close observation, strong composition, and the visual tension between realism and painterly interpretation.

Smulka is especially recognized for paintings of glass bottles, jars, and reflective objects, often enlarged beyond life size so that light, shadow, and transparency become the real subject of the work. While his paintings are highly realistic, he has described his goal as something more atmospheric than simply copying a photograph, keeping the trace of the artist’s hand visible through subtle brushwork and intensified observation. This balance gives his work its distinctive presence: precise enough to feel immediate, but still painterly enough to hold warmth, depth, and movement.

His work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, with showings through galleries including Gallery Henoch in New York, Plus One Gallery in London, CK Contemporary in San Francisco, and others. Smulka is a two-time recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and his paintings are included in private, corporate, and public collections across North and South America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. ×
